Russian Dwarf Hamsters Vs Chinese Dwarf Hamsters
Russian and Chinese dwarf hamsters have been battling for ages. O.K. not really, but a battle of sorts has been happening. For a long time, pet owners have been battling with the decision between owning Russian dwarf hamsters or Chinese dwarf hamsters. I myself love both so much I would never be able to choose one over the other. In this article I’ll go over both kinds hamsters and a few of their differences and similarities.
The most noticeable difference between these two kinds of hamsters is appearance. Sure they are both very cute and very small, but they also look very different. The Chinese dwarf hamster looks more mouse-like than other hamsters. He actually has a tiny tail (about an inch long). He’s also more slender than the Russian dwarf hamster, who sometimes looks more like a small hamster-ball. They’re both around the same size, about four inches long, although there are species of Russian hamsters that are much smaller (the Robo Russian dwarf hamster only grows to about two inches long).
One of my favorite parts about both Russian and Chinese hamsters are their fur patterns.
They both have oh-so-magnificent colors and patterns, but they are very different from each other. The Chinese hamster usually has a black line that runs down his spine and a belly that is white. Other Chinese hamsters have spots of color distributed across their backs. Russian dwarf hamsters, on the other hand, come in a whole slew of colors and patterns. This is because they’ve been bred specifically as beautiful pets for many generations. They range in colors from white to sandy brown to dark grey and have a number of different patterns that also including a dominant stripe down the back similar to that of the Chinese hamster.
Not only do Russian dwarf hamsters differ in appearance from Chinese dwarf hamsters, they also have a great difference in behavior as well.
One major difference between the two is that Russian dwarf hamsters are more social while Chinese hamsters are sometimes a bit anti social and have trouble with their roommates (especially the females!). But although they may be a bit less social, the Chinese hamsters are also less problematic in that you shouldn’t have to worry about them nipping at you. This is something that the Russian dwarf hamsters tend to do more.
As you can see, Chinese dwarf hamsters and Russian dwarf hamsters are both very similar and very different at the same time. They are both great pets to own and I would suggest you give them both a chance (although Chinese hamsters are harder to find s

A Guide To The Albino Dwarf Hamster
Article by Derek Farley
When you think about a hamster you don’t always think dwarf. Dwarf hamsters are tiny and adorable. They are simply mini versions of the big hamsters you find in pet stores. China has a large population of these animals so they are commonly called Chinese.
A dwarf hamster grow to be as large as 4 inches. They have very short legs and big heads. Most dwarf hamsters have a dorsal stripe on their body. There are several different colors of hamsters that can tell you which type of dwarf hamster you have. Some are completely black and their dorsal stripes are also black. There are also hamsters with dark brown fur that can be mistaken as a black hamster. Some people have said that Opal dwarf hamsters are the most unique of them all. They are silver and blue with white undersides and gray dorsal stripes.
Albinism means a lack of pigment and it happens to many animals. Albinos are white all over their body with pale pink skin. The either have blood-red or pink colored eyes. Most of them are dark eyed with patches of colors on their coats. A common misconception people make is that the winter white dwarf is not an albino. This hamster is only white during the winter season and maintains dark eyes with a silver dorsal stripe. Albino Syrians were found in the 1950s. Russia did not discover there’s until the late 1980s.
There are some albinos that are born without their eyes and only live to be a year old, when the usual life span is about three years, according to the UK Hamster Society. Red eyes may be prone to albinos but they can occur in many other types. It is not yet known if red-eyed ones have better, worse or the same vision as the dark eyed ones. Most of these small animals already have poor vision.
Taking care of these tiny creatures isn’t much different from taking care of any other animal you might own. You need to make sure that there is a designated place for the hamster to have his or her own domain. You will need to feed and water them everyday, if there is uneaten food you should throw it away as soon as you notice it. About once a week their bedding should be changed to avoid a nasty smell and a dirty hamster.
These small animals are really quite adorable and can easily fit into the palm of your hand. They are sensitive though, you may need to shower your pet with love and attention especially if you only brought home one.
